Life Coaching vs. Counseling: What is the Difference?
How do I choose? Which is right for me?
LIFE COACH OR PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR?
Life Coaching is a relatively new field. Coaching sessions are focused on the present and the future and ways that the Client desires to create, establish, and maintain goals designed to improve their quality of life. The Client is not necessarily free from troublesome emotions, but these emotions are not driving their behaviors and these emotions are not due to a new crisis or trauma. A Life Coach serves as a sounding board and cheerleader and support as the Client moves toward their desired goals. Each Life Coach typically specializes in their area of training and focus
Counseling is focused on current stressors as well as ways that the past continues to dominate and influence current emotions and decisions. Examples of areas of focus in Counseling sessions: Anxiety, Depression, Mood Swings, Psychosis, Suicidality, Grief, Addictions, Relationship dysfunction, Stress, and Trauma. The professional Counselor is licensed by the state in which they practice, and is viewed as the one who guides the sessions and guides the Client in the recovery process of healing from emotional distress. The past, and the ways that the past continues to negatively influence the present, is often a primary focus of counseling sessions.
Life Coaching can be effective for Clients who are basically free from chronic mental health symptoms which are regularly interfering with their quality of life. Counseling is recommended for Clients who suffer from chronic emotional distress which interferes with daily functioning. Psychiatric intervention may also be recommended by the Counselor. Counseling is typically covered by Insurance Companies, whereas, insurance typically does not cover Life Coaching.
